Instructions for one chat

Choose Instructions at the top of a chat to tell the assistant how to behave in this chat only — for example “Answer in Spanish” or “You’re reviewing a legal contract; be precise”. Up to 8,000 characters. A dot on the button shows instructions are active. Leave the box empty to remove them.

Instructions are sent with every message in the chat, so long instructions add a little to each message’s cost. They aren’t available in incognito chats.

Your custom instructions and memories

In Settings → Personalization you can tell the assistant about yourself and how to respond, and save memories. Custom instructions and memories apply to every chat, including project and incognito chats. They’re sent with each message, so long instructions add a little to each message’s cost. A chat’s own instructions are added on top of them.

Export a chat

Choose Export at the top of a chat:

• Markdown (.md) — plain text with formatting.
• HTML (.html) — opens in any browser.
• PDF.
• JSON (.json) — for tools; includes which model served each reply and its cost.

To export many chats at once, use Library → Select → Export (Markdown or JSON). To download everything in your account, see Export your data.
