Organise work with projects

A project keeps the chats for one goal together, with instructions and documents they can share.

Create a project

  1. Go to Projects and choose New project.
  2. Start from a template (Blank, Research assistant, Code helper or Writing editor) or from scratch.
  3. Give it a Name, and optionally a Description and Project knowledge — instructions for how the assistant should behave in this project.
  4. Choose Create project.

Project knowledge (instructions)

Project knowledge is added to the start of every chat you begin with the project’s New chat button.

  • Editing the knowledge affects chats you start after the change; existing chats keep the instructions they started with.
  • A chat you move into a project from elsewhere doesn’t pick up the instructions, but it can use the project’s files.

Project files

Add documents on the project’s Files card with Add file. They are prepared for search, so chats in the project can find the relevant pages when you ask about them.

  • Before a document is uploaded you’re asked to confirm, because making it searchable costs up to $0.04 per file (usually less). It shows in your wallet activity as “Document indexing”.
  • Search, filter and sort the list; open a file to see the text the assistant reads.
  • Remove takes a file out of the project.

Moving chats

  • From a chat in the sidebar: ⋯ → Move to project, or No project to take it out.
  • In bulk: Library → Select → Move to project.

Archive or delete

  • Archive hides a project from your lists and pickers; its chats and files are kept. Find it under Archived on the Projects page and choose Unarchive to bring it back.
  • Delete permanently removes the project with its instructions, files and chats, and turns off any share links to those chats. A file you also use in another project or chat is kept there. This can’t be undone, so move out any chat you want to keep first. A large project can take a few minutes to finish deleting.

If you have lots of projects, Load more at the bottom of the Projects page (or Load more archived) shows the rest.

Starting a project chat or adding project files needs an active plan or trial.
