Large documents: search, summaries and page choices

If a document is bigger than the model can read, the panel says “{file} is bigger than {model} can read” and offers these options.

Knecty prepares the document for search once, then, for each message, sends the pages that best match your question.

  • Preparing it (indexing) costs up to $0.04 per file, usually less, charged when you choose Use this. It shows in your wallet as “Document indexing”. The chip then shows “Indexed for search”.
  • Each later message adds a tiny search cost, shown as “Search embedding” in the reply’s cost breakdown.
  • Under the reply: “Searched 120 pages of report.pdf, read 3–4, 77.”
  • If indexing fails at our end, it’s refunded automatically. If your balance is too low, nothing is charged and you can still send pages.
  • There’s a daily indexing limit. If you reach it, the option says “Daily indexing limit reached” — send pages instead.

First part

Sends the pages from the start that fit. Good when the beginning is what matters.

Choose pages

Pick exactly which pages (or, for Word, text and Excel files, which parts or sheets) to send. The picker shows how many tokens your choice uses and whether it fits.

Switch model

If another model can read the whole document, the panel offers “Switch model: {model} reads it whole”.

Summarise all, or spread

If you ask for a summary or overview of a document that doesn’t fit, Knecty asks “How should Knecty read {file}?”:

  • Summarise all {n} pages — a lower-priced model reads every part and your model writes the answer from those summaries. You see the estimated cost first; the amount is held and settled at what it really cost. It shows as “Document summary” in your wallet. Summaries of the same file are reused later, so asking again costs less.
  • Use {k} pages spread across it — samples pages evenly through the document, and the model is told it’s a sample.
  • Choose pages.

You can also set this with Read as at the bottom of the panel: Relevant parts, First part, Summarise all or Spread.

If search can’t run

If there’s no question to search for, or search is briefly unavailable, Knecty sends the first part and tells you (“Search unavailable — sent the first part.”).
